White-tailed Deer
Deer and deer hunting are big business across the United States. Each year, White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) provide many people with opportunities for recreation and sustenance. Through these opportunities, White-tailed Deer are the most popular and most hunted big game species in North America. With this popularity, the White-tailed Deer are a natural resource of great importance to many people. So important, much money is spent every year in the pursuit to hunt, to manage, and to research this animal.
Scientifically, White-tailed deer are considered a “keystone species”, which means deer have the ability to over-browse a forest ecosystem directly affecting the health of the herd, quality of the habitat and other species of wildlife utilizing the same forest. When deer herds are assessed as unhealthy, the forest is unhealthy, as well. Through decades of research, it has been proven when the deer herd – habitat relationships are balanced, we see improvements in herd health, herd performance, and forest productivity.
With interests in deer, deer hunting, and deer management at an all time high; it is important, as stewards of the natural resources, to maintain focus on healthy deer herds in balance with deer habitats.
